Cartagena de Indias - Colombia

I was extremely lucky to be in Cartagena de Indias for work last week and I ended in love with the city!

The old city still keeps its authentic defensive walls, and inside them you can find brightly painted houses with wooden balconies, colorful flowers and a lively atmosphere. You can get lost for hours walking through its streets, although the old city is not that big, but in every corner there is something that will make you stop to look and marvel!

And the food! Mmmmmm!!!!! Sea food is my favorite so I had a life´s share of camarones cooked in all kinds of ways with freshly pressed juices of fruits known and unknown to me!

I highly recommend this incredible Caribbean city!!

Wayuu bags from Colombia

I just bought this fabulous bag in the streets of Cartagena de Indias, Colombia.

I am currently in love with Cartagena but that deserves another post.

These bags are hand woven by the Wayuu women from the region of La Guajira and come in a wide range of colors, from neon bright to neutral browns. It made it very difficult to choose only one!!

Hamburger Challenge - The Butcher

The challenge started in The Butcher, in the very busy Albert Cuyp market. (specially if you go during the weekend, like I did)

A tip on finding it: if you are walking through the market, you will inevitably be distracted by all the market stands and you will miss it. I do recommend to take the sidewalk, otherwise your hunger will grow exponentially with the vision of so much food and the image of a hamburger in your mind!

Once in The Butcher, you will find yourself in an open-kitchen space and a couple of tall tables. The procedure is quite simple: get your tall table, check the menu, order at the cash and watch while your order is being cooked in front of you.

Not easy to choose from this original menu (love the" Who let the dogs out" one!)

 Starring, The Daddy:

The Butcher with Cheese:

  Confirmed!!!!!! MMMMMMMmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!
(also the french fries with mayo)

Location: excessively busy
Menu: very original, for everyone (beef, lamb, chicken, veggie..)
Hamburger: both were mouth-watering
Service: very nice
Price: 8 - 12€ per person (with drink and fries)

As this is the first restaurant, it gets the TOP 1 position until challenged!

Definitely my favorite Dutch sweet (besides stroopwafels and speculaas) and like most seasonal sweets, you crave for it for the rest of the year so as soon as they are available...you stock up!!

Kruidnoten start to appear at the end of October to prepare for the seasonal highlight of Sinterklaas (a distant cousin of Santa Claus and far more important in the Netherlands) at the beginning of December.

Their key to success? Cinnamon, brown sugar, butter and spices! Mmmmmmmm!!!!!!
